Yesterday, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) sat for an interview with KUSA, an NBC affiliate in Colorado. In response to a question sent to the network by a third grader at a local elementary school about what the Vice President does, Palin erroneously argued that the Vice President is “in charge of the United States Senate“:
Q: Brandon Garcia wants to know, “What does the Vice President do?”
PALIN: That’s something that Piper would ask me! … [T]hey’re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom.
HUH? The VP is NOT ‘in charge’ of the Senate. Article I of the Constitution makes this very clear. While the Vice President presides over the Senate, he or she is not in charge of it. Article 1 says The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no vote, unless they be equally divided.
What gives? Why doesn’t she grasp this concept? This is the second time she has gotten it wrong!

I don't really get it either. The VP position can only break a tie vote in the Senate, that's pretty much their only role there. Beyond that, (and this should have been the easy answer) the VP's role is to act as adviser to the President, and to prepare to become the president should anything happen. They should educate themselves and learn what to do should they get into that position. Obviously, Palin doesn't plan on educating herself so much. Though she does want to increase the power of the VP office, something that even Cheney hasn't had the nerve to call for. It's scary, maybe she wants to lead the Senate. As for those people saying Biden got it wrong, was Biden also wrong when he said that the VP office is within the executive branch, end of story?
